Strikeforce Houston Picks – August 21, 2010

Strikeforce: Houston

Date: Aug 21, 2010
Location: Houston, Texas
Venue: Toyota Center
Broadcast: Showtime

MAIN CARD

* Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (for light heavyweight title)
* Tim Kennedy vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (for vacant middleweight title)
* Jorge Gurgel vs. K.J. Noons
* Chad Griggs vs. Bobby Lashley

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Daniel Cormier vs. Jason Riley
* Andre Galvao vs. Jorge Patino
* Rocky Long vs. Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhaes
* Kier Gooch vs. Adam Schindler
* Jose Santibanez vs. Reynaldo Trujillo
* Humberto DeLeon vs. Chad Robichaux
* Chad Cook vs. Arteneus Young

August 21, 2010 at Strikeforce Houston will be King Mo’s first title defense after his destruction of ex-champ and former top 10 pound for pound fighter Gegard Mousassi.  Feijao Calcavante has been fighting good lately, but if King Mo fights the same fight that he did against Gegard, there is no fight.  Lawal’s wrestling will simply be too strong for the challenger to deal with, and look for King Mo to retain the title.

Is Tim Kennedy really the 2nd best middleweight in strikeforce?  Jacare should win this easily.

Not really a fan of KJ Noons, but really can’t go against him here.  Jurge Gurgel is probably still too ignorant to use his strengths (BJJ) and will end up trying to get into a boxing match with somebody who recently tried to become a pro boxer.

Strikeforce will give Bobby Lashley another can before he starts to fight real competition.

In fact this whole Strikeforce card is a lot of uneven fights where the favourite will be a safe play.

Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery

  • Champ Alistair Overeem vs. Brett Rogers (for heavyweight title)
  • Andrei Arlovski vs. Antonio Silva
  • Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Joey Villasenor
  • Roger Gracie vs. Kevin Randleman
  • Antwain Britt vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante

  • Darryl Cobb vs. Booker DeRousse
  • Mike Chandler vs. Sal Woods
  • Lee Brousseau vs. Fransisco France
  • Tom Aaron vs. Erik Steenberg
  • Matt Ricehouse vs. Greg Wilson

Firstly a reminder to all Canadians that Stikeforce on Showtime is available to Rogers customers for free right now on SuperChannel.  There is currently a free promotion that is running for the next 2 months, so hopefully that will extend to next month’s Fedor fight as well.  You might have to call in to Rogers to get this activated.

This strikeforce event in St.Louis: Heavy Artillery will likely act as a redemption event.  After the chaos and disappointments of the previous CBS event, Scott Coker will need this to be a good fight night to put Strikeforce back into the good books for mma fans.  UFC is countering with a very impressive Fight Night Special for free on spiketv.  Spike TV presents a special telecast of 2010’s most action-packed mixed martial arts fights, including the heavyweight showdown between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir and the unforgettable slugfest between Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung (aka “The Korean Zombie”)  in “UFC’s Ultimate Fights” on Saturday, May 15 (10:00 PM – 12:30 AM ET/7:00 PM – 10:30 PM PT).

Featured bouts include:

o    Shane Carwin vs. Frank Mir (UFC 111) in a battle for the interim UFC heavyweight crown
o    Leonard Garcia vs. “The Korean Zombie”, Chan Sung Jung (Aldo vs. Faber) in
“The greatest fight I’ve ever seen!” according to Joe Rogan
o    Mark Munoz vs. Kendall Grove (UFC 112) in a matchup of middleweight contenders that earned “Fight of the Night.”
o    Terry Etim vs. Rafael Dos Anjos (UFC 112) in a hard-fought contest between rising lightweights
o    Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg (UFC 109) in a match between two veterans.
o    Nate Diaz vs Rory Markham (UFC 111) in Diaz’ debut at welterweight
o    Paulo Thiago vs Mike Swick (UFC 109) in a fight that moved one man up the ladder of the welterweight division.

Onto  the Strikeforce Picks

Alistair Overeem has been untouchable the last few years, but he has also been ducking a lot of tough fighters.  Brett Rogers will be his toughest opponent since holding the belt, and I think the underdog Rogers will take home the belt tonight.  We really haven’t seen Overeem need to take a punch lately, and with the punching power of Rogers, its a strong possibility that Overeem will go down.

Glass jaw Arlovski will attempt to redeem himself with a tough match against Antonio Silva.  Andrei has played the giant killer role before in beating Tim Sylvia, but I don’t think he has much of a chance against Big Foot here. Plus Silva is an underdog in this fight, great pick opportunity!

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza over Villasenor is a no contest.  Way too good of a BJJ game for Jacare.

Kevin Randleman kinda sucks now, and I’d only take him at +1000 over anybody

Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante should win over Atwain Britt in a close fight.

There is also a Shine Fights event featuring Din Thomas vs Ricardo Mayorga tonight that you can bet on.

Strikeforce: Nashville April 17 2010 Picks

Strikeforce: Nashville

Date: Apr 17, 2010

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Venue: Bridgestone Arena
Broadcast: CBS

MAIN CARD

  • Champ Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson (for middleweight title)
  • Champ Gegard Mousasi vs. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (for light heavyweight title)
  • Champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki (for Strikeforce lightweight title)

PRELIMINARY CARD

  • Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs. Tim Stout
  • Zach Underwood vs. Hunter Worsham
  • Josh Schockman vs. Cale Yarbrough
  • Dustin Ortiz vs. Justin Pennington
  • Andrew Uhrich vs. Dustin West
  • Chris Hawk vs. Ovince St. Preux
  • Thomas Campbell vs. Cody Floyd

Firstly a reminder that Strikeforce: Nashville happens this saturday April 17, 2010 and it’s free on CBS.

The main event of this fight is a big mismatch, not quite a Silva vs Maia or Penn vs Edgar (oops) underdog, but pretty bad.  Dan Henderson is a big 185 fighter, while Jake Shields is a small 170lb fighter.  How is Shields ever going to hang with Henderson.  In my opinion this is Jake Shield’s last fight in Strikeforce before he enters the UFC, and he will go out on a loss.

Gegard Mousasi vs Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is a very interesting and much anticipated fight.  There really hasn’t been tough competition for King Mo, so we’ll have to see how he does against a stud like Mousasi.  In the end I believe the Gegard will be way too experienced and talented than King Mo, and should win by submission fairly quick.

Shinya Aoki is an underdog vs Gilbert Melendez.  Even without his rainbow pants, I would pick Aoki.  His submission skills are sick, and he definitely will not get into a standup match with Gilbert.  Very good underdog pick here in Aoki.

In the other televised bout Jason “Mayhem” Miller is an overwhelming favourite and theres a reason why.  -1000 is way too low to bet, no point betting this fight.

Strikeforce Miami Picks

Strikeforce arrives in Miami on January 30, 2010

MAIN CARD

  • Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (for vacant welterweight title)
  • Champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos vs. Marloes Coenen (for women’s featherweight title)
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef
  • Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims
  • Greg Nagy vs. Herschel Walker

PRELIMINARY CARD (broadcast on EASportsMMA.com)

  • Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)

  • Pablo Alfonso vs. Marcos da Matta
  • Michael Byrnes vs. David Zitnik
  • Sabah Homasi vs. John Kelly
  • David Gomez vs. Craig Oxley
  • Hayder Hassan vs. Ryan Keenan

Marius Zaromski is an underdog against Nick Diaz, take Zaromski now!  Though the odds are lower now, its still a great bet at +200.

Robbie Lawler vs Melvin Manhoef is an interesting matchup.  If Lawler stays standing, he’s done.  Melvin might be one of the best strikers in all of MMA.  Matt Hughes will probably tell Ruthless to take the fight to the ground, but I doubt he will listen.  KO win for Melvin.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is a lock to win, no question about it.

Bobby Lashely over Wes Sims is another lock.

Will Herschel Walker win his mixed martial arts debut?  Probably

Jay Hieron should be able to beat Joe Diesel Riggs no problem as well

Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers Picks

Remember Strikeforce Fedor Emilianko vs Brett Rogers is FREE tonight on CBS

MAIN CARD

  • Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers
  • Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs. Jake Shields (for vacant Strikeforce middleweight title)
  • Champ Gegard Mousasi vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (non-title match)
  • Antonio Silva vs. Fabricio Werdum

PRELIMINARY CARD

  • Marloes Coenen vs. Roxanne Modafferi (CBS reserve fight)*
  • Jeff Curran vs. Dustin Neace*
  • Shamar Bailey vs. John Kolosci*
  • Deray Davis vs. Mark Miller*
  • Nate Moore vs. Louis Taylor*
  • Jonatas Novaes vs. Christian Uflacker*

Can’t wait for this main event?  Will Brett Rogers be able to land a strike on Fedor, does he have any skills if Fedor takes it to the ground?  Nobody has even seen if Brett has any BJJ defence so its most likely doubtful.  The upset looks inviting, but its very unlikely that Fedor loses here.  Go with Fedor.

I like Shields over Mayhem Miller.  This fight will go on the ground often enough for Jake Shields to secure some kind of submission

Gegard Moussasi should destroy Sokoudjou

Werdum should be able to take on Giant Silva

In the end, I would go with all the favourites for this Strikeforce event.
